This hand-forged Viking bearded hatchet is marked with the Kolovrat — the Norse sunwheel, an ancient symbol of the sun, life, and eternal cycles. The engraved head pairs the sunwheel with runic detailing, set against a striking red-stained wood handle finished with a white leather cord wrap for grip. Compact at 16 inches, it's an ideal one-hand axe for camp, carry, and display. Forged by hand in our Wyoming workshop, it comes with a brown leather sheath and is part of our Viking battle axes collection.
We forge this axe by hand — us, Naqash and Younas Minhas — with more than 15 years of combined experience at the bench. The head is shaped and engraved individually and the handle stained and hand-wrapped, so this is a genuine one-of-a-kind piece rather than a mass-produced replica. Its compact size and bold color make it a standout among Viking axes.
The Kolovrat Sunwheel in Norse Legend
The Kolovrat, or sunwheel, is one of the oldest symbols in Norse and early European tradition. Representing the sun, life, and the endless turning of the seasons, it was a symbol of light, protection, and renewal. Engraved on this axe head alongside runic marks, the sunwheel gives the piece deep meaning and an unmistakable Norse character.
The Bearded Axe Shape
This is a classic bearded axe, the defining Viking design. The lower edge of the head extends downward into a "beard," lengthening the cutting surface while keeping the head light and fast. On this compact 16-inch axe, that shape makes it quick and controllable in one hand — practical for camp tasks as well as a striking display piece.
Forged Steel Head
The head is forged from high carbon steel 1075, which takes a keen edge and holds up to real use. This is a functional axe, not a soft display casting. Because carbon steel can rust if neglected, wipe the head clean and dry after handling and apply a light coat of oil before storage.
Red Wood Handle with Leather Wrap
What sets this axe apart is its handle. The wood is stained a deep crimson red and shaped for a comfortable grip, then finished with a white leather cord wrap over the grip section for a secure hold and a bold two-tone look. A leather lanyard completes the traditional styling. It's a handle that stands out on any wall or workbench.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a real, functional Viking axe?
Yes. It's hand-forged from high carbon steel with a wood handle, built as a real, functional bearded axe rather than a soft display replica. Its compact 16-inch size makes it easy to handle, and many owners collect and display it as well.
What does the Kolovrat sunwheel symbolize?
The Kolovrat, or sunwheel, is an ancient Norse and European symbol of the sun, life, and the eternal turning of the seasons. It represents light, protection, and renewal, which is why it's a meaningful engraving on a Viking axe.
What size is this axe?
It has a 16-inch overall length with a 6-inch bearded head, making it a compact one-hand axe. That size is easy to carry and handle while still delivering the presence of a traditional Viking axe.
What is the handle wrapped with?
The red-stained wood handle is finished with a white leather cord wrap over the grip section, giving a secure hold and a bold two-tone look, along with a leather lanyard for traditional styling.
What is a bearded axe?
A bearded axe has a head whose lower edge extends downward into a "beard," lengthening the cutting edge while keeping the head light. It lets you grip just below the head for control, and it's the classic Viking axe shape.
Does this axe come with a sheath?
Yes. It includes a brown leather sheath to protect the engraved head and cover the edge for safe storage and handling.
How do I care for this axe?
Wipe the steel head clean and dry after handling and apply a light coat of oil before storage to prevent rust. Keep the leather wrap and handle away from prolonged damp, and the axe will last for generations.
Is this axe handmade?
Yes. It's forged, engraved, stained, and wrapped by hand by Naqash and Younas Minhas in Casper, Wyoming. Because each is made individually, no two axes are exactly alike.
